Perfect time for a Polar Adventure

Although the wintry temperatures in the Chicago area have been less than polar, the Chicago Park District's Polar Adventure Days still offer fun, free family activities. Here are some of the highlights taking place noon- 4 p.m. Saturday and Feb. 24 at Northerly Island:

- Horse-drawn carriage rides around the island.

- Live birds of prey display by the Spring Brook Nature Center (130 Forest Ave., Itasca; 630-773-5572, itascanaturecenter.com).

- Interactive ice carvings.

- Demonstrations on preparing for an arctic expedition by The Northwest Passage of Wilmette (800-RECREATE, nwpassage.com).

- Storytelling with Mama Edie Armstrong noon-2 p.m. Saturday only.

- A live animal show 2-4 p.m. Saturday only.

- An educational discussion on local fauna and their eating habits by Mary Beth Prodinski from the Field Museum (1400 S. Lake Shore Drive; 312-922-9410, fieldmuseum.org)
