With yoga sessions in the mornings and evenings combined with wonderful kayaking excursions on Lake Michigan’s scenic shores, you will experience Door County like never before. We created this weekend program to teach you the basics of sea kayaking (no experience necessary) during the day, and leave time for twice daily yoga practice. Join us as we embark on a journey of the mind, body and spirit at one of Lake Michigan’s most scenic locations.
Day 1: Arrive at Peninsula State Park in Door County around 7 PM where you meet your guides and yoga instructor. We share snacks around the campfire and discuss the schedule for the next couple days.
Day 2: Wake up, grab a cup of coffee and maybe a piece of fruit and you’re off to the sun salutation yoga session, while the guides prepare a full breakfast spread for post yoga refueling. Then it’s off to the water where the guides lead an introductory kayak lesson before we all set out on a leisurely paddle. We stop for a trail lunch before getting in a bit more paddling. Return to camp for some rest or a quick hike before you go for the second yoga session of the day while the guides prepare a hearty dinner.
Day 3: Another sun salutation kicks off the day, and then it’s on to more paddling. Again we break for a trail lunch and then land our kayaks, load up the vehicles and say our goodbyes.
This is all you will need - anything else is unnecessary baggage and will only be extra weight to carry.
All items should be packed in dry bags or double garbage bags. Several smaller bags fit in the kayaks more easily than large bags.
Note that kayak hatches are rarely more than 1 ft. wide.

- Wetsuit (farmer john style) (can be rented from Northwest Passage)
- 2 t-shirts (one that’s non-cotton)
- 1 towel (small PackTowel® work great!)
- 1 shirt, long sleeved synthetic (non-cotton)
- 2 pairs of shorts (at least one non-cotton)
- Sun/rain hat 1 pair fast drying synthetic long pants - no blue jeans
- 1 light to medium fleece jacket 2 pairs shoes/sandals - Tevas, booties, water shoes, light sneakers etc. all work very well - one pair to get wet.
- 2 pair socks (non-cotton)
- 1 pr. synthetic long underwear (medium weight)
- Bathing suit
- Bandanas (optional) (can be used for head covering, washing up, etc)
- Rain gear (jacket and pants) (Paddling jacket works well as top)
- Clean change of clothing for the trip home (should be left in car)
- Toiletry kit (toilet paper, toothbrush, biodegradable soap and shampoo, face cream, nail clippers, personal medication etc.)
- Sunscreen and bug repellent
- Sleeping bag (compact, 3-season) and pad
- Small flashlight, batteries & extra bulb- headlamps are preferred
- Water bottle
- Chums/Croakies to keep glasses on your head are imperative (floating ones are preferable)
- Energy bars/snack food (limited quantities- we will feed you plenty!)
- Pocket knife
- Large plastic cup with handle (e.g. commuter coffee mug) or small lexan Nalgene (for hot drinks)
- Fleece hat and gloves (depending on the weather)
- Ziploc® storage bags (pack small items inside these; also good for packing out wet clothing)
- Paddling gloves (can be any type of open fingered glove e.g. biking gloves, sailing gloves etc.)
- Camera, film, waterproof container
- Reading matter and maps (waterproof case)
- Paddling jacket
- Sewing kit
- Crazy Creek® or similar generic chair (highly recommended for camp use, gives great back support)
- Entertainment (harmonica, cards, games)
What is special about this trip?
This is a fantastic close to home destination - far enough from city lights that the stars and Milky Way explode in the night sky, and the travel time to get there is more than manageable. The bays, rivers and inland lakes provide a great learning environment while the playful conditions on the lake side of the peninsula satisfies the confident beginner or intermediate paddler. Oh, and the forested camp and scenic shorelines are just begging for exploration. Cap this off with twice daily yoga sessions, and you won’t want to leave!
How do I get there?
The route from Chicago is very simple. Take 94 to Milwaukee, and then take 43 to Green Bay. Take highway 57 towards Sturgeon Bay where you turn onto 42 which takes you right up to the park entrance.
What papers do I need for travel?
You need no papers, just a Wisconsin State Parks sticker or three day passes.
How and where will you meet me?
We will send you directions to our campsite where you’ll meet your guides, who will set up your tents and provide some opening night fireside snacks.
How long will it take me to get there?
The drive from the Chicago area takes between five and six hours.
Where should I stay overnight around there?
There’s a wide variety of hotels, cottages, B and Bs lodges throughout Door County. If you plan on arriving early or staying late, call the office for a recommendation on a great place to stay.
What money should I take?
You won’t need money for anything during the weekend, but there are lots of shops in the area if you want to bring back gifts.
Do they take plastic there? Are there cash stations?"
Just about every place in Door County accepts major credit cards. There are ATMs in just about every town as well.
What's the weather like?
It’s similar to Chicago’s summer. It can reach the 80s and even the 90s on some days, with lows in the 60s at night.
What are the accommodations like?
We camp in 2 to 6-man Eureka tents.
What do I need to bring?
We will send you a gear list upon registration.
Can I drink the water?
Yes, there is running water throughout the park.
What's the food like?
The guides cook up delicious food and lots of it. Enjoy hearty, hot breakfasts each morning, filling trail lunches, one of our dinner specialties like fajitas or jambalaya and if you’re in Door County, you have to try the famous cherry pie.

All of Wisconsin is in the Central Time Zone.

How much time do we spend traveling each day? How many miles? Do I have free time?
We kayak about 2-5 hours a day, and practice yoga both mornings as well as Saturday evening. There is time to hike, swim or rest in the afternoon.
What kind of equipment do you use?
We use plastic sea kayaks, Eureka tents and Coleman stoves.
How many people are on this trip? How many guides? Who are the guides / what are their qualifications?
Typically we take between 4 and 12 people on this trip along with a certified yoga instructor and ACA or BCU certified kayak guides who are also certified in Wilderness First Aid.
How can I prepare physically for the trip? How much prior experience is needed?
No prior yoga or kayaking experience is necessary. Neither is any sort of pre-trip conditioning.
