The Samariá Gorge, also known as, the “Grand Canyon of Europe” is one of Greece’s national treasures and a major highlight of the Crete Kayak Adventure.
In the space of a few hours, you hike from snow-capped mountains to a beautiful, warm water beach. Along the way, you'll pass through pine forests and Europe’s deepest canyon, including the famous “Iron Gates” where only 13 feet separate 1800’ high gorge walls.
Aside from its awe-inspiring geology and flora, the gorge and the surrounding White Mountains are the only remaining habitat for the indigenous wild kri-kri goat, mesmerizing sights in their own right.
The Samariá Gorge is a well-known natural wonder that attracts upwards of 1,500 hikers a day during peak season, which can make for a crowded experience. But when you walk with The Northwest Passage, you get the canyon more or less to yourself! We schedule our adventure such that we start hiking well past the time that 99% of gorge visitors begin walking. The difference between hiking as part of a river of people and being free to peacefully enjoy the experience at your leisure is monumental.
Come see for yourself. It’s an experience that stands out amongst a lifetime of adventuring.
