Hi readers! My name is Anna, and I’ve had the privilege of guiding with The Northwest Passage for a few years now. One of my absolute favorite trips is our Crete Kayak Camping Adventure, and I’ve been lucky enough to join several over the years. Crete holds a very special place in my heart, and I never miss the chance to return!
Kayaking along Crete’s rugged coastline is something I never get tired of. The island is stunning, but seeing it from the water makes it even more incredible. Throw in camping under the stars, and it’s an adventure you’ll never forget.
If you’re thinking about joining us but feel unsure about the camping or kayaking, no worries! I’ve picked up a few tips along the way that’ll help you feel ready and excited for the journey ahead.
1. Clothing: Dress and Pack for Success
Crete’s coastal weather is typically pretty predictable (hot!) during our kayak season, but it can cool down in the evenings and get a bit breezy if you’re visiting in a shoulder month, so it’s important to pack a few essential layers.
Quick-dry clothing is a must—both for paddling and for days spent exploring ashore and is usually made from lightweight, synthetic material, or even merino wool, which is very breathable and moisture-wicking. You will get wet while paddling, and nothing is worse than staying soggy throughout the day.
Other important items include a hat, sunglasses (Croakies or Chums are a plus!), and plenty of sunscreen—the Mediterranean sun is strong. Packing light is highly suggested. You don’t need much! Expect to wear a bathing suit during the day (sun protection as well) and change into dry clothes at night for dinner. Don’t forget your sleeping bag! You will find a lot of other things you want to bring along are likely unnecessary.
2. Toiletries: The Bare Essentials
When it comes to toiletries, less is more! All you really need is a toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen, and wet wipes if you like to wash your face before heading to bed. Each beach we camp at has a toilet and a freshwater shower so don’t forget a small personal towel!
Biodegradable soap is a good option as well if you like to get extra clean before heading into your sleeping bag. Feel free to count your dip in the Med as your shower for the day though!
2. Where to Find Drinking Water
Crete offers a few opportunities to fill up on fresh drinking water, but don’t rely solely on finding it en route. Your guides will know the best spots to refill, but be sure to carry a large water bottle that is filled and ready to go always! We do not recommend drinking from the tap and suggest buying water bottles at our various stops along the way.
It can get hot on the water and during hikes, especially if there is no wind, so always be sure to be drinking water and hydrating!
3. How to Handle Salt Water: Embrace It!
Paddling and swimming in the Mediterranean will leave you salty, but that’s part of the charm! As mentioned above, there is the option for a freshwater rinse each day, and it can be helpful to rinse your gear to avoid it getting too salty and keep it functioning well.
4. Sleeping Bag: What's the Right Temp?
Nights on our Crete Kayak Camping Adventure are typically warm. It’s a good idea to bring a sleeping bag rated around 55°F to ensure warmth on cooler nights but thin enough that you stay cool if the temperature rises a bit. A lightweight sleeping pad is also optional if you want to be even more comfortable.
5. Prior Experience Needed?
One of the best parts of this Northwest Passage adventure is that no prior kayaking experience is required! We welcome beginners, and our expert guides will teach you everything you need to know about paddling techniques and safety. If you’re an experienced paddler, great—you’ll appreciate the chance to fine-tune your skills or just enjoy the rhythm of the water.
6. Double or Single Kayaks: What's Right for You?
On our Crete adventures, we often use double kayaks for their stability and ease. If you’re new to kayaking, doubles offer more security and allow you to paddle with a partner. Plus, the shared effort can make longer stretches more manageable. If you’re an experienced kayaker and prefer to paddle solo, single kayaks are also an option.
7. Footwear: Versatile & Functional
You’ll want a pair of sturdy water shoes or sandals for kayaking and swimming, but also bring a pair of light hiking shoes for exploring Crete’s stunning landscapes on foot. Lightweight and durable shoes are key, as you’ll need something comfortable both on the trail and on the beach. We love Chacos or Bedrocks if you want something a bit more lightweight.
8. Embrace the Adventure Spirit!
Above all, remember that this is an adventure. Embrace the beauty of being off the beaten path. Our Crete trips offer a blend of adventure and relaxation (and don’t forget incredible food!)—you’ll paddle through secluded bays, hike to ancient ruins, and sleep on pristine beaches under the stars. Flexibility, a positive attitude, and a sense of adventure will be your best companions.
9. Extra Tip: Document Your Journey
Bring a small notebook or use your phone to document your daily adventures. Not only will you create a lasting memory, but reflecting on your adventure as you go will help you slow down and appreciate the small, magical moments that make Crete so special.
Take as many photos and videos as you can! It’ll help you relive the moments when you’re back home wishing you were under the Cretan sun!
